How to Transfer Ownership of a Facebook Business Page

  • by

Transferring ownership of a Facebook Business Page is an essential process when changing roles within your organization, selling your business, or delegating responsibilities.

I recently had a client who bought not one but 7 businesses in one go.  This meant that we needed to take ownership of all the Meta Facebook pages and Instagram accounts, and let’s not forget their Google Business Listings (a blog for another day).

Meta Business Suite, Facebook’s all-in-one platform for managing business assets, makes it relatively straightforward to assign new ownership (if you know how).

There are 2 ways to transfer ownership.

Option 1 – Transfer ownership in the existing business manager account

Option 2 – Transfer ownership into your Business Manager account

Option 1- Transfer ownership in the existing business manager account

If the pages and other assets are no longer needed by the original owner a simple step is to transfer ownership in the existing business manager account.  The original owner can then be removed from the business manager making all the pages and other assets yours.

Here’s a quick guide to transferring ownership of your Facebook Business Page in the existing business manager account.

Step 1: Understand Roles in Meta Business Suite

Before transferring ownership, it’s important to understand the different roles within Meta Business Suite:

Admin: Admins have full control over the Page and its settings. Only admins can assign or transfer ownership.

Editor: Editors manage content but cannot change roles or access settings.

Other Roles: Roles like Moderator, Advertiser, and Analyst have limited access.

To transfer ownership, the person you’re assigning ownership to must already have an Admin role.

Step 2: Add the New Owner to Your Business Manager

If the new owner isn’t already part of your Meta Business Suite, you’ll need to add them:

Log in to Meta Business Suite: Navigate to Meta Business Suite.

Access Business Settings: Click on the gear icon in the left-hand menu to open Business Settings.

Add People:

Go to the “People” section.

Click on the blue “Add” button.

Facebook Business Portfolio

Enter the email address of the new owner and assign them the Admin role.

Click “Next” and confirm the invitation.

Accept the Invitation: The new owner will receive an email invitation. They must accept it to be added as an Admin.

Step 3: Assign Ownership of the Facebook Page

Once the new owner is an Admin, you can transfer the Page’s ownership:

Go to Pages in Business Settings:

In Meta Business Suite, navigate to “Business Settings.”

Under “Accounts,” select “Pages.”

Select the Page: Click on the Facebook Page you want to transfer.

Assign the New Owner:

Click “Add People” and select the new Admin.

Confirm their access level as “Full Control.”

Repeat this with other

Remove Yourself (Optional):

If you no longer wish to have access to the Page, return to the Page settings and remove your Admin role.

Step 4: Verify the Transfer

To ensure the transfer was successful:

Ask the new owner to log in to Meta Business Suite and verify their Admin status.

Confirm they can manage all aspects of the Page, including settings, posts, and advertisements.

Important Considerations

Security Measures: Ensure the new owner has secure login credentials and two-factor authentication enabled.

Ownership Limits: A single Page can only have one “Primary Owner.” Make sure this setting reflects the new ownership.

Compliance: If selling a business, document the ownership transfer as part of the sale agreement.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

If you encounter issues during the ownership transfer:

New Owner Not Receiving Invitations: Double-check the email address and resend the invitation.

Insufficient Permissions: Verify that you and the new owner both have the necessary Admin roles.

Technical Glitches: Clear your browser cache or try a different browser. Alternatively, contact Facebook Support for assistance.

Transferring ownership of a Facebook Business Page is a straightforward process when you use Meta Business Suite effectively. By following the steps outlined above, you can ensure a smooth transition and maintain the continuity of your business’s online presence. Whether you’re stepping away or delegating responsibilities, having a plan ensures your Facebook Page remains in good hands.

Option 2 – Transfer ownership into your Business Manager account

Let’s say you own a café called ‘Hazel’s Tea and Cakes’ and you buy another café called ‘Daisy’s Tea and cakes’. The original owner of ‘Daisy’s Tea and Cakes’ has a number of other cafes so you want to transfer the page and other assets into your own account for simplicity of separation and in order that you can manage both pages from within one business manager account. Here is a simple guide to this process

Moving ownership of a Facebook Page from one Business Manager to another requires following these steps:

Step 1: Remove the Page from the Current Business Manager

  1. Go to Meta Business Settings
  2. Select the Business Manager that currently owns the Page.
  3. In the left-hand menu, go to Accounts > Pages.
  4. Click on the Page you want to transfer.
  5. Under Settings, click Remove (This will release the Page from the current Business Manager).
    • Only the Business Admin can remove a Page.
    • If the option to remove isn’t available, it means the Page is linked to assets (such as Ad Accounts). You may need to unlink those first.

Step 2: Add the Page to the New Business Manager

  1. Log into the new Business Manager account.
  2. Go to Meta Business Settings again.
  3. Navigate to Accounts > Pages.
  4. Click Add > Add a Page.
  5. Enter the Page name or URL and click Add Page.
  6. If you’re the Page Admin, the request will be approved automatically.

Important Notes:

  • Only an Admin of the current Business Manager can remove a Page.
  • Pages can only be owned by one Business Manager at a time.
  • If the Page was created inside the original Business Manager, it cannot be removed—instead, you may need to transfer the Business Manager itself.
