Create a blog
Oh how my clients quake when I use the word Blog. However, starting a blog is one of the most essential small business marketing practices. The main purpose of writing a blog is to provide key insights on topics within your industry. However, it also helps improve your website’s SEO, as you post to it regularly.
Optimize Your Website for SEO
Also known as search engine optimization, SEO is the process of increasing traffic to your site by ranking higher on Google and other search engines. There are several tools for researching high traffic keywords and phrases. I find the keyword planner within Google Ads to be a useful resource
Try PPC
If your still not getting enough or the right kind of traffic to your website then PPC (Pay-per-click) marketing can be the answer. Pay-per-click, is a type of internet advertising on Google, Facebook and more in which the advertiser pays every time an ad is clicked. It’s not Free like so many of the other strategies I mention in this Blog but has proven to be very successful and deliver excellent return on investment for many of my clients.
Create Landing pages
A landing page is a stand-alone web page created to market a specific product or service, it may not be visible from the main homepage or have a tab to direct you to it. Its goal is to guide your audience toward making a purchase, whether by generating leads or converting them into customers. These landing pages can be used for targeted PPC (see above) campaigns.

All hail Social Media Marketing
Firstly, find out where your customers hang out. Are they scrolling Facebook or browsing Pinterest? Create professional business pages on these platforms and post content that reflects your brand image and voice, resonates with your target audience, and provides real value.
You should also interact with your audience in the comments section, as this is an effective way to achieve lasting relationships with your customers.
Utilise Email Marketing
Email marketing is a great way to keep customers engaged with your brand. Try to send regular emails with a range of offerings this could be sharing your blog posts, introducing special offers and discounts, launching new products or services or simply sharing seasonal greetings.
Generate local awareness
One thing I have noticed about 2020 is a real shift towards supporting local small businesses. A simple way to ensure that your local small business is noticed by your local audience is through community awareness of your brand or products.
If you’re a small business that is local then Sponsor local events (even online ones) and volunteer your branded products for use in local fetes, festivals, and workshops. You can also get involved in community projects, such school fundraisers, food banks or create your own fund-raising campaign.
Ask for customer reviews
Oh, how I bang on about this to my clients. Do not be afraid to ask for a review for a job well done. Google reviews are the ultimate goal but reviews on social media or sites such as yell and checkatrade also carry weight.
Top tip…One of my clients has his team carry a QR code on their phones so at the end of each job whilst the client is waxing lyrical about how wonderful everything looks they ask for a quick review. One scan of the phone and a review on Google is posted.
Ask for help
If all of the above leaves you overwhelmed don’t be afraid to get some help. You could handle the marketing which you feel comfortable with such as the social media whilst outsourcing the more complex elements such as Google Ads or Email Marketing.
