With everybody in lockdown it is not surprising that people are spending more time online. If you live with teenagers (as I do) you will certainly be getting the most from your unlimited broadband package. The steady stream of delivery drivers to my neighbours confirms that shopping online has become the new norm.  What can you do to support your small business marketing in lockdown?

Ensuring your website content is up to date and relevant should be something you do routinely, but if you have let it fall through the cracks, now really is the time to get it done and focus on your marketing in lockdown.

Local SEO

One of the things I get asked about most is Local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) i.e. getting your website found on search engines such as Google by local people searching for businesses like yours.

46% of all Google searches are of people searching for local information, and 86% of people look up the location of a business on Google Maps

Here are a few little marketing in lockdown tips that can help you be found by local people looking for businesses like yours…

  • Do not neglect your blog titles. If you sell Cheese for local delivery in Berkshire call your blog ‘The 10 best cheeses for delivery in Berkshire’ or similar, these titles will help the search engines to understand what you do and where.
  • Optimise your Google Business Listing.  Google My Business (GMB) is a tool used to manage your online presence across Google, including Google Search and Google Maps.

A staggering 56% of businesses have not claimed their Google My Business Listing (I am working on bringing this number down)

Make sure it is kept updated, that you respond to reviews, add images, share news, opening hours etc.

  • Going back to No. 1 make sure the content on your website is localised.  Do not just talk about Cheese, talk about cheese in Berkshire, local Berkshire cheeses, top cheeses of Berkshire, you get the drift
  • Add your business to online directories. Yell.com, TripAdvisor, Bing places for business and many more can help build backlinks.  Just make sure that the information you list with them is consistent with your listing on GMB. Consistency is key
  • Use your social media. If you have a local following make sure they are kept updated with your news, latest products etc and make it social. Your existing customers will be your best marketing tool.  You could also run social media adverts targeting local people with interests in your products and services.

Even If your small business is currently closed, you can still use this time to improve your local search ranking and engage your followers on social media.
